On June 4, 2020, I celebrated my 80th Birthday! I take no particular credit for this accomplishment but rather attribute this achievement to good genes, a relatively healthy lifestyle and the blessing of a Higher Power. Along the way I have made some mistakes, accomplished a few goals, tried to live a meaningful life, and I look forward to many more healthy years.
During my eighty years, I know that I have learned a lot about a lot of things. I have been successful academically, in my chosen profession of teaching, and in experiencing many different countries and cultures during my travels. More importantly, however, the life lessons that are the essence of this blog are not based upon academics or book knowledge. I have chosen to identify 80 life lessons that I primarily acquired though my own mistakes, the wisdom of others and carefully observing the reactions and actions of many friends and colleagues.
My life lessons are not particularly unique, nor unfamiliar to most people. They were identified during an “off the top of my head” brainstorm (or possibly a nostalgic reflection) over a brief timeframe. That is to say that I probably missed a lot of life’s real truths and teachings that if I had been more focussed I would have included.
I have tried to personalize each and every lesson in some way by including the reason it was chosen or the circumstances that led to its inclusion. I am telling my story and I am sure that no one will agree with all of my choices. Some of the lessons will seem to be repetitive in some aspect, but that is OK. Each one has its own unique twist or element. Read them for fun or use them as a personal checklist if you want. Or not. I hope they will provide for some enjoyment or reflection!
